A Coruña, February 3, 2025 – The Spanish Agency for Artificial Intelligence Supervision (AESIA) has launched its website; an accessible and transparent communication channel for citizens, businesses and institutions.
This new portal provides information related to the Agency’s operation and activities, its ongoing projects, existing AI regulations and will also enable any natural or legal person to file complaints about infringements of AI rules, among other issues.
AESIA is a pioneer in Europe and its functions are key to moving towards a reliable, ethical and human-centered AI. In accordance with its Statutes, it carries out monitoring, dissemination, advisory, awareness-raising and training tasks aimed at public and private law bodies for the proper implementation of all national and European regulations on the appropriate use and development of artificial intelligence systems. In addition, the Agency has the functions of inspection, verification and penalty.
Following the adoption of the European Artificial Intelligence Regulation last August, AESIA assumes a crucial role in monitoring compliance with this regulation. Thus, it acts as the relevant Market Surveillance Authority; also as a single point of contact with Europe working in coordination with the European Union AI Office; and has also entrusted tasks in support of innovation, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises, including start-ups.
With this new regulatory framework, the Spanish Artificial Intelligence Oversight Agency is facing 2025 with two milestones highlighted in the calendar: from 2 February onwards it will supervise and inspect possible prohibited AI practices and from 2 August it will be able to sanction companies carrying out such practices prohibited by the AI Regulation.
Therefore, there are many tasks and challenges ahead of AESIA by 2025, in an area such as AI, which is constantly and rapidly evolving, with all the social and economic impact that this entails, but also with numerous uncertainties that require a commitment by public institutions to transparency, ethics and the protection of fundamental rights.
Thus, this website will henceforth be a prominent means to facilitate such transparency and contact with the public, a means to which more content will gradually be incorporated and which, in addition to providing information, will contribute to continue positioning Spain as a European reference in the supervision of this technology.
