A Coruña, 1 August 2025. One year after the appointment of its director general, the Spanish Artificial Intelligence Supervisory Agency (AESIA) consolidates its role in Europe in the promotion of ethical, sustainable and trustworthy AI. The protection of citizens' fundamental rights, the creation of an ecosystem of Spanish AI companies and the dissemination of the AI Regulation - together with the supervision of possible banned AI systems - have marked the agenda of AESIA, which makes a positive balance of its activity during the last twelve months.
Spain is one of the countries with the largest presence in the working groups created by the European Union's AI Office, the centre of expertise in artificial intelligence for the entire EU and a key player in the implementation of the Regulation. Through forums and expert groups, and with the collaboration of AESIA, Spain actively participates in the twenty or so working groups that address issues as diverse as the application of the Regulation in the healthcare field or the groups of good practices for general purpose artificial intelligence. Moreover, it does so with the maximum number of participants allowed by the EU, a sign of Spain's involvement and commitment.
Incorporation of AESIA staff into their job positions
This summer also marks one year since the first employees joined AESIA, a task that continues with public and open selection processes to recruit talent and multidisciplinary professional profiles.
Currently, there are already around 30 people working in the physical headquarters in A Coruña in a first space temporarily ceded since February by the City Council of A Coruña, inaugurated in the presence of the Minister for Digital Transformation and Civil Service, Óscar López, and the Secretary of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence, María González Veracruz, for the celebration of the Governing Council.
Since the beginning of its activity, AESIA, as a fundamental institution for the promotion of the artificial intelligence ecosystem in Spain, has participated in more than a hundred events, achieving more than 12,000 impacts, especially in those sectors and companies most directly related to the application of the Regulation. It thus contributes to generating confidence and security in the Spanish market, supporting and promoting innovation and the development of ethical and reliable AI systems.
The Spanish Artificial Intelligence Supervisory Agency has launched the Citizen Mailbox through which any person or company can send their doubts and queries; a communication channel that contributes to public transparency and citizen participation. Likewise, in the balance of these last twelve months, it is worth highlighting AESIA's commitment to AI literacy, a function that will be intensified in the coming months with a specific plan.
Crucial role of AESIA
On 11 March, the Government approved in the first round the Draft Bill for the good use and governance of Artificial Intelligence in order to promote an ethical, inclusive and beneficial use of AI, advancing in compliance with the European Regulation. In this sense, AESIA will play a crucial role in overseeing the use of artificial intelligence within the Spanish AI ecosystem.
Finally, AESIA, which will be designated as the market surveillance authority of reference and Single Point of Contact with the European Union, is already carrying out monitoring of possible prohibited AI systems put into service or used in the Spanish market. In this regard, from 2 August 2025, the obligations of suppliers of general purpose AI models placed on the market after this date apply. The ultimate goal is to continue to ensure a high level of consumer, health, safety, security and fundamental rights protection, as well as the deployment of ethical, sustainable and reliable artificial intelligence systems at national level.
